Sex and the sex talk

Married Boo had a very honest look at sex on her blog. I enjoyed the open mindedness in which she discussed her own feelings and needs on the subject. One thing that came out of that was the sex talk aka "the birds and the bees". I have no idea where that phrase came from because frankly, there isn't any bees stinging or birds flying when it comes to sex. But I understand that somehow, someone came up with a visual and that was the best visual they could find.

How did you find out the nitty gritty of sex? Being 45, it wasn't a common day conversation in my house. In fact, my sisters and I grew up in a strict Christian family and the church we attended frowned on pants wearing and even lipstick wearing and s-e-x was definitely taboo. I remember one time, a girl who had to be at least 19 or older, got pregnant (not married) and she had to ask for forgiveness in front of the whole congregation of 800 people. If that was a scare tactic, it must've worked for a bit because I didn't remember seeing too many unmarried pregnant girls walking around the church.

My twin sister and I were curious by nature and no one was talking or giving up the info. So, one day, we got nosy and found a Cosmopolitan magazine under our parents bed. It had all sorts of how to's and positions. All we saw were pictures of men laying on women and women laying on men, with no clothes on. We got the giggles and quickly closed it up and shoved it up under the bed. I couldn't imagine my parents being in that sort of position or positions.

Then, it happened. I happened to go into the room late at night to tell my parents that I couldn't sleep..that I was scared of the dark and I saw my dad on top of my mom, he was breathing hard and she was moaning. It scared the crap out of me! I wanted to wash my eyes out with soap. I thought, "My parents are doing the nasty! Ewww!" Of course, I had to share my info with my twin so I tiptoed into her room and told her what I saw. We were shocked into silence. Is that how babies were made? So, we asked and of course, my mom didn't tell us. She said that she'd tell us all about it when the time was right.

We would sneak in our older sister's room and look at a book called, I Wonder, I Wonder that should cartoon like pictures of the process but it was usually interrupted by our sister coming back into her room. The talk never did come.

Flash to when I was freshman in high school. Aside from having my period, I still knew nothing about sex. I was dating this guy and had only minorly kissed on the lips but nothing more. One day, he told me that he was having a hard time being around me because when we were hugged up close, he'd get an erection. Hello! I had NO idea what that was or what it meant. I went straight home and to my sister's room where we got the dictionary. I remember like it was yesterday…she said, "Did he say iruption?" I told her what I thought it sounded like. We searched the dictionary for hours trying to find out how the word was spelled and what that word meant. Bingo! Erection! I began to blush and then giggle and then discovered, I knew nothing about male body parts or even about sex. So, I decided to learn. My partner in crime, my twin and I went to the library. She was the look out while I scoured the shelves for books about sex. Viola! We hit paydirt. We settled into a corner of the library and passed the books between us.

To be continued…..

Although this is funny, it's also sad to me that your parents couldn't be open and honest with you when you asked. I mean come on, you were 15 years old by this time! Mikayla is turning 12 this week and we're having the talk with her very soon.

I have a lot in common with this particular topic. My parents were very Christian and I can't remember a full sex talk ever happening. And, um, did we go to the same church?! haha! I used to attend a baptist church on Wednesday nights and they had a pregnant teenager and her boyfriend get up and ask for forgiveness for having sex out of wedlock. I did think that was a little extreme. Oh, and I too have walked in on my parents...really wish that hadn't happened!

I had that same experience with the hearing of the parents and I had the never ending echo in my head afterward. Thanks for calling that sound back up, lol.

"I wanted to wash my eyes out with soap." made me laugh out loud-- I've felt like that before but never knew how to say it-- I'll borrow your line in the future :-)
