Thru thick and thin

Yesterday, I put on my renegade hat and rescued a friend. This friend doesn't speak any English but understands it well. He prefers his own dialect.I've watched this friend grow wiser, braver and tougher, yet, always keep a playful, funny outlook on life. He lives at the hospital where I work and those of us that have grown fond of him, watch out for him.

Imagine the horror when I found that someone didn't appreciate his sense of humor and warm personality. They wanted Velvet Elvis to leave the premises and they were going to help him. I was shocked to find my furry friend in a trap, prepared to be hauled off to the animal shelter where he would be put to sleep. That person apparently didn't realize or understand the value of Velvet Elvis's friendship.

I saw the look in Velvet Elvis's eye and I did the only thing a true friend would do. I crawled through the bushes, sprung the trap, told him, "Go! Go! Run Velvet Elvis, run!" He took one look at me and then ran for his life.

I walked back into my office, covered in dirt and leaves. I told my co-workers, "Don't ask. I did what I had to do."

You know, that's the way true friendships are. Their value is even greater than the value of marriage. They are there when you say I do. When you have that first argument. When you hurt and there's no words to explain it. They laugh with you. Are never embarrassed to be seen with you. They celebrate milestones and give their unbiased opinions (even though sometimes, it hurts.) Friends are people you can accidentally fart around and instread of them giving you "that look" - they laugh right along with you. They very seldom make promises that they can't keep but when they do, they are willing to apologize and explain.

Do you have that kind of friend? Are you that kind of friend? If not, go out and make a friend with someone. You'd be surprised at how many lonely people there are that feel as if they haven't got a friend.

Awww, I love this post! I would have done the same thing. When the call center where I work had a mice problem, I felt so appalled to learn that some people took it upon themselves to catch little mice in plastic bags, then flush them in the toilet. I was waiting for the opportunity to present itself so I can cuss them out & safe the little critter. As for your view on friendship, its right on point! Simone, I send an Amazon giftcard through your email (simonemoland@gmail.com) for tangerine, for her bday. I didn't have her email (I do now, but I had already sent it to you) Can you pass it on?

Oh, I didn't see this post yet today--I had stopped in earlier before it was here!

I loved this post and how you sprung your friend! Yea!! You're a hero!! What kind of friend is he?? A cat??
I guess it does not matter--good for you. I was cheering for the both of you!

Friends are hard to come by and to keep. It seems as time travels by, so do some friendships. It's hard work being a friend and most of us aren't up to the task in our busy lives. I find I'm calling some and they don't respond, and vice versa--I've been a horrible friend to some very good people. I'm not proud of that.

I find, like you, that some of the best friends I have had are of the 4 legged variety. They've taught me a lot about forgiveness, ignoring the faults, and moving past those times.

Sweet story!

Yes, Velvet Elvis is a kitten that we (a few of us in our department) have nurtured and taken care of. He and his 3 sisters. One died a few months ago. But they've been a joy to watch during lunch breaks.

I appreciate animals*from a far* since I am a bit afraid of most of them;) but I would never want one hurt! Kudos for what you did! As for friendship, I agree. Good friends are the ones that will pick you up if that relationship ends, and are there for you during the fights...they should always be valued.
