I Dare You's

Some of my most treasured moments with my daughters begin without much thought. For instance, when Single Boo was living in TX, I missed her so much. I tried to convince myself that she was not too far away. I would call her when she was at work and leave her a voice message, singing a song, any song, in my typical goofy way. When I missed her phone calls, she'd surprise me the same way. It got to a point where I couldn't wait to get her missed call so I could save them.

Single Boo also has this unusual collection...grocery lists. Working at Costco, she finds tons of them lying around. Whenever I'm at the store and find one now, I bring it home and I proudly present it to her. (I have no idea what she plans to do with them but who knows, maybe she'll write a book and title it, Things To Remember To Get At the Store.

Then, there's the I Dare You's. That begins when one of us mentions something on a whim and then, that other person dares them to make it happen. It could me 12:00 midnight and Single Boo will say, "I am craving Del Taco...but I shouldn't." I'll say, "I dare you." And, off she goes to get her Del Taco fix.
The other day, we were at the grocery store together when we both saw a guy in a wheelchair. Single Boo said, "That guy is hot."

I reminded her that sometimes someone needs to hear that. Then.....I dared her. I said, "Why don't you make his day and tell him."

She hesitated and then I said, "I triple dare you and off she went in search of him....looking up one aisle and then down another. Finally she came back and reported the conversation. It went like this:

Single Boo: Hi. I know this may sound really creepy but I'm not a creepy girl or anything. I just wanted to let you know that you are very handsome."

Hot Guy: Thank you so much. (smiling)

Later, as we were checking out, he looked at Single Boo and smiled really big and told her thanks again.

She replied, "I told myself that this year would be a year of authenticity. I wouldn't hold back from expressing my thoughts or telling people what's on my mind."

He beamed.

Then, Married Boo is notorious for calling me and saying, "I need Mommy advice." Usually, it's nothing serious, just reassurance and sometimes a moment to make her laugh.

I treasure my daughters because they love me just as I am and together, there is so much joy. I anticipate what's to come now that Married Boo and Son in Boo are now living here in Oregon.

What moments do you share with your family that makes you unique?

I love these stories! How fun that Single Boo collect grocery lists. I love that she told that guy he was handsome. It makes me smile!
I make up songs and sing them to my kids. They make faces and groan, but they love it!

We all need to hear an unsolicited compliment. Bravo to you and your daring do daughter.

Our kids and I like to reminisce about my mother and do imitations of her laughing, asking for water or wherever the pleasant memories come from.

It makes me think of my mother and the fun we used to have.

Made me smile. Thanks.

I enjoyed this post, Simone!

I have boatloads of memories I treasure, but those I treasure most of late are time spent with my Mom, reading aloud to her. Every morning as she has breakfast, I read to her because she can't read herself any longer. I act out all the parts and add commentary and we both laugh and laugh. I'm trying so hard to etch these memories in my brain and heart so I don't forget them.

Your relationship with your daughters makes me smile and feel a little sad all at the same time. Your girls sound amazing and like everyone else I think it's just awesome that Single Boo made that guy's day. My daughter and I have been going through a rough patch for a while now, but lately every now and then the clouds part and the sunshine that is her smile will shine through and give me hope that we'll survive to be close again one of these days.

You and your Boos are so close it makes me cry happy tears, and I am thrilled Married Boo is closer to you now!

I can't single out any particular moments with my children right now, but I can think of something my mom and I share - our birthdays are only two weeks apart, and one year she sent me an envelope with a lone $5 bill in it. No explanation, nothing. So when her birthday rolled around, I sent that $5 back with a question mark on it. She called, laughing, and said she'd just figured out what had happened - she had meant to enclose my birthday card and $25, but somehow, her head just wasn't together that day, and she forgot the $20 and the card. So now, every year, we just send that $5 back and forth - the same $5 bill!

All great stories Simone-- The grocery list collection is so unusual that it'll probably be a best seller!

Living a year of authenticity-- WoW! That's perfect and telling the guy he's handsome is a fabulous way to kick off the new year.

I love the dares. What great fun. Especially when one turned into such a gift. Isn't it a blessing when your daughters become your friends? Being 1000 miles from my girls, I am so thankful for all the electronic communication we have now.

I love your stories. Keep'em coming.

You are so amazing. I love reading your thoughts. They always make me think. This time, they made me think about how my mom and I have grown apart. Sure I still talk to her at least once a week, but I became so wrapped in myself and my own personal issues that I kinda pushed her away. We use to be so close. :-( There was a time when I would get a daily call like clock work and I knew it was her before I looked at the caller id.

I think I kinda miss that...

I would love to see the grocery list collection. I'm sure they are very interesting. :)

I like that your daughter made that guys day. I'm sure he has probably never heard that or hasn't heard that in years. How sweet of her to do that--wheelchair or no wheelchair.

Our best times are when we are laughing together. I love when we just hang out and play wii or something and laugh. I miss my son now that he is off at college. :(

I love these accidental traditions. The things that happen when we aren't looking and turn out to be the joys that give our life texture.
