As far as I can remember, I had a love for books. My mom would read my sisters and I books that seemed to come alive right before our very eyes. I loved the sound of her voice as she read but I couldn’t wait until I was big enough to read all by myself.
Summers were spent reading underneath the air conditioner or by the stereo where we would trade books with one another. The librarian knew to save books for us because they were quickly devoured and we were ready for more.
I imagined life on the Banks of Plum Creek, being Margaret in Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret or one that I often wished, The Mummy Market, a place to trade in your mom. I laughed with Ramona Quimby and became an entrepreneur with Eddie Hits Paydirt. I saw myself in each book that I read.
The love of books still remains. In fact, to de-stress, one of my favorite things to do is to go to a second hand store and browse through the books. Going to the library is similar to having that first morning cup of coffee on a Saturday…pure delight!
What’s been even more of a wonderful gift is having friends that are authors who I have cheered on from the very beginning. When
came out with The Husband Project, I was doing the chicken dance on the sidelines. Each and every book after that has been a hit. I definitely can’t forget who’s book, Spiritual Misfit has become one of my favorites of this year.
Then there’s Jen Hatmaker, Debbie Macomber, Lysa Teurkeurst, Lisa Harper, Emily Freeman, Annie Downs, Karen Zacharias, Sara DeBarge, Jennifer Duke, Angela Thomas, Lisa Samson, Tsh Oxenreider, Ann Voskamp, Kimberly Cash Tate, Sheila Walsh….the list goes on and on and on.
There’s many that I’ve forgotten and much more that are already on my pre-order list.

books have always played a huge role in my life...it was an escape to another land...and joy ride once i knew how to read...and i am passing that off to my boys now....
i read close to 9000 pages this summer...and my oldest read at least 2000
I share your love of books, beginning as a child, and so does my hubby. I chose librarian as a career and have had 2 co-authored books published. I recently read 5 Jane Austen books, what a gifted writer she was.
That's quite a few pages, Brian! I love that you are instilling that in your kids. The love of books come from adults who are willing to show them how to dream and use their imaginations while reading.
Terra, I would've loved to have been a librarian but then, I probably would've gotten into trouble reading books instead of staying focused. :)
I remember our teachers reading to us in grade school. I think it was 5th grade when she read Little House on the Prairie books to us...I've loved that series and so have my two children. I remember reading Requiem for a Princess and I think it was the same one where there was a house with a widow walk on it...and the children found a wall that would open to a secret passage way. There they found a way up the the walk. I always thought old houses in stories were great! Lived in a couple old houses in my early years...no secret rooms or passageways...but I can dream, huh? I've not been reading much lately, except my devotions. One day I need to finish a couple books I'm almost finished with...I'm not good at it .....just too much to do, I guess. But reading is a great escape and it opens up a whole new realm!
From one book lover to another, I have to ask - are you on GoodReads. Oh, it's so wonderful! Come meet me there.
By the way, you and I love so many of the same books. Next I am off to request the few in your list that I didn't read in childhood. We also love many of the same authors so I'm off to explore them. Thanks.
Simone, this is beautiful. I share your love of books. Sometimes I can see my reflection better in a book than a mirror. Books teach us -- about life and humanity, and most of all, about our need for Jesus.
Hurrah for books. I cannot imagine a world without books. One of things that I want our kids to have is a love of books / reading... Seeing kids totally engrossed in a book really warms my heart. :)
