Things I've Learned Thursday

I'm down but not out...at least not too far gone that I can't tell you about the things I've learned. It's been a very interesting week.

1) I just found a new gross pet peeve. I was on the phone when the person that I was talking to announced, "Hold on, I have to spit." Ewwww. Seriously? Did you have to tell me that? Of course, I listened for the sound of him spitting too. Gross!

2) I discovered the new cheapskate...when a person moves out, go in to the empty house and take the shower door, the knobs off of cabinets, just plain ol' help yourself! I saw it for myself...a guy carrying a shower door back to his house from across the street.

3) I just can't bring myself to watch award shows anymore. I'm not sure if it's that it's no longer interesting to watch someone get up and make a drunk award acceptance speech or that I really don't care what someone is barely wearing on the red carpet.

4) Usually, when I have a craving something, it means that I'm deficient in something. Like when I crave peanut butter, usually, I need some protein in my diet to bring my blood sugar levels up. I'm craving won ton soup. I really, really want some won ton soup! What am I deficient in?

5) Seeing the ex with his wife and child doesn't affect me anymore. I can proudly say that I've moved on.

6) There are certain smells that still remind me of my childhood...like honeysuckles, sweet potato pie, the smell of a brand new magazine (has something to do with a photography book that my sister and I used to smell all the time), the smell of gasoline (another one of those clueless childhood smells), the smell of the library, Elmer's glue and vanilla flavoring.

7) Certain sounds remind me of my childhood....one sound...skkkkrrrrttt...that reminds me of running with my slippery Mary Janes and sliding only to bite the pavement. The sound of the heater coming on in the morning, reminds me of when my dad would get up so early in the morning to make sure his family was warm enough to get out of bed and start our day. Swish, swish, swish...the sound of the hula hoop. Don't know where I got the hips to move it but I sure could, back in the the day. The sound of the ice cream truck driving through the neighborhood. Back then, candy was a nickel or a dime and ice cream was a quarter. The good ol days!

8) Sometimes when we face the unfamiliar, we find out that we are exactly where God wants us to be.

9) It amazes me how clueless people can be about racism. Yes there are differences in colors of our skin and for some, that will always be a factor in judging others but when it comes to someone needing a friend, needing help or someone to reach out to them, color SHOULD NOT matter.

10) I'm sad that helping the lady at the assisted living place has had to end because she is having screaming episodes now and accusing everyone of stealing her money. Although she isn't accusing me, I would rather visit her when she isn't outraged and accusatory and not pleasant to be around.

What have you learned?

I really enjoyed this post. It had a little of everything - happy, sad, sentimental... I love reading about the sounds and smells of your childhood. It brought me back. I'm so sorry you can't volunteer with that lady anymore, but you did bring joy to her for awhile. I'm glad we have moved forward on the race issue, but we need to keep working on it. It's sad that people miss out on some relationships simply because of this.

#8 - So true. :)

The ice cream man from my childhood would push a little cart and has a little bell in his hand that he would ring to announce his arrival and all the neighborhood kids would crowd around his cart as he scoops out the ice cream into sugar cones. Hmmm.

Oh Sweetie...
I so love this post. It shows you, and it shows me how down to earth you really are. It shows you aren't afraid to share your heart. I love it.

I too love so many of your childhood smells that you remember. Gasoline? For me, it was because my Grandpa owned and operated a Texaco station. We spent a lot of time there, and you guessed it we did smell gasoline.

I am so sorry that you have had a bad week. Me too. Maybe it was in the water this week. I am sending you hugs sweetie. Smile and know that you are loved. Country hugs and much love...Sherry

You started with a gross... eewwww that would make me vomit. May be all over the phone.. eeewww
It was a good post and I am happy for you to have moved on. I know it is so difficult to do that.
I may have to do a blog to tell what I have learned... it cannot be short comment. ;)

"...I really don't care what someone is barely wearing on the red carpet." Me neither.

Sorry your friend at the nursing home is in such a bad state. I hope they can settle her down soon.

The the racism thing-- People can be such idiots. I'm sorry that's even on your radar.

Hope the rest of your week is a good one.

I agree with you on the red carpet. I am tired of hearing about the expensive gowns, the hair, and jewelry. It makes me think how pointless it all is when there is so much trouble in the world and these people are flaunting about.

Get yourself that won ton soup!!

On Thursday I learned that I cannot truly work a full day anymore. We are busy at the firm so I stayed till about 3:30 (normally I leave at 2). This old gal had no energy past 3 pm for working..... I used to be able to work hard for many hours. Not any more. Have a great weekend and I answered your moose question over in my comments. xoxo

This was a great post. Sometimes it's just great to sit back and reflect on the things you learned throughout the week about yourself.. about others. I love the things that reminded you of your childhood. Many of those, we share.

Yes, I knew a couple that even rolled up the telephone lines and took them.

It's funny the things that take us back to our childhood.

Sweetie, I'm as white as the driven snow but as far as I'm concerned we are all brothers and sisters in the Lord and sister ya' just can't beat family! :o)

You have yourself a fabulously blessed weekend Simone!!!

(1) I've learned that what we WANT always gets blurred with what we think we SHOULD want
(2) I've learned NOT to offer to buy a woman's house when she has alzheimers. The next day, the offer changes
(3)I've learned that my best friend is black.....I hadn't noticed til you brought it up
(4) I've learned that smells carry more memories than photos.
